As we close another school year, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your continued support, partnership, and commitment to our schools and students. It has truly been an incredible year across the Moon Area School District.

As the school year comes to a close, we take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible educators, staff members, and administrators who are retiring from Moon Area School District this year. These individuals have dedicated their careers to serving our students, families, and community — and their impact is immeasurable. 

We have been made aware of a phishing email circulating with the subject line “confirm your account verification” that appears to come from the external email address DOIT@MASD <esquilhaabdel@gmail.com>. 

If you received this message, please do not click on any links, download attachments, or respond to the sender. This email is fraudulent. We are not requesting account verification for any Moon Area School District related accounts.  

As we approach the end of the year, we want to make sure that families have important information regarding the last day of school and graduation.  

Moon Area High School seniors participated in the annual Parade of the Past in May.

It’s time to start thinking about Homecoming 2026!

With construction taking place on campus, we are shifting our Homecoming festivities a bit, but make no mistake -- they are still going to happen!

With construction beginning on the new secondary campus facilities, the Moonlit 5K will be on hiatus for 2026. So this year, we’re hitting the fairways with a brand new fundraiser — the MAEF Golf Marathon!

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we recognize and celebrate our amazing teachers who make a difference in our schools every day. Our teachers are real-life superheroes—going above and beyond to support, inspire, and empower our students. 

Moon Area elementary gifted students had an exciting day of hands-on science with Mr. Ben Renwick from Covestro in April!

Moon Area School District students in grades 3–8 from our Elementary & Middle School Challenge Program recently competed at Baldwin-Whitehall’s 24 Challenge Competition, representing our schools with enthusiasm, focus, and outstanding sportsmanship.

You’re invited to MASD Safety Night on May 6th at 6:00 PM in the Moon Area High School Auditorium. The program will run for approximately 2 hours.

Moon Area School District's Kennywood day is Monday, June 15, 2026! Tickets are $32.99 if purchased by May 18. The price will increase to $35.99 after the May 18th deadline.

The Moon Area School District Board of School Directors recognized several outstanding students at a school board meeting in March. 

The School Board also recognized two outstanding student athletes -- Haley Smarsh and Cael Yanek. 

MASD Hosts Regional PA Principals Association Meeting Moon Area School District (MASD) hosted the West III Regional Service Session (RSS) of the Pennsylvania Principals Association on March 26 at the high school. The event brought together school leaders from across Western PA for a day of collaboration and professional learning.

Dr. Julie Moore, principal of McCormick Elementary School in the Moon Area School District, has been named a 2026 Pittsburgh Penguins MVP (Most Valuable Principal). This distinguished recognition honors exceptional school leaders who demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality teaching, student achievement, and positive school culture.

Moon Area School District Elementary Challenge students had an incredible day at Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium participating in Wild Investigations, hosted by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit!

During Read Across America Week, students at McCormick Elementary School came together to celebrate the joy of reading.

Moon Area School District (MASD) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, March 10 to commence and celebrate the construction of various stadium renovations.

Students at Brooks Elementary School and McCormick Elementary School recently celebrated Read Across America with creative STEAM activities in the library led by Miss Poupakis.

An education and support virtual series that provides students, parents, families, staff, etc. the opportunity to learn and gain information from presenters from local organizations, agencies and businesses is available to MASD families and staff members.

Students from Brooks Elementary and McCormick Elementary recently enjoyed an unforgettable experience at Robert Morris University! Students and staff attended a women’s collegiate basketball game as part of a schoolwide field trip focused on building school culture, teamwork, and community connection.

As we reflect on another successful year, we are proud of the progress we have made together as a district. With our high school, middle school, and four elementary schools - Allard, Bon Meade, Brooks, and McCormick - we have entered a new chapter in the history of Moon Area. We are excited for what the future holds for our entire school community.

Happy National School Counseling Week!

Thank you to our incredible school counseling team -- Allison Ream, Amanda Spirnak, Gregory Christian, Neil Tkatch, Valerie Valdiserri, Tyler Krokonko, Kelly Speer, Julie Sitko, Emily Smith, Patricia Johnson, Deanne Hinerman, Jodi Yanosick, and Melissa Monyak!

Our elementary students celebrated in style—some dressed like they were 100 years old, while others rocked shirts covered in 100 items! From counting, creating, and solving math challenges to STEAM fun in the library, it was a day filled with learning, laughter, and lots of 100-themed smiles! 

Our Elementary gifted students had an amazing time at BotsIQ!

Students were challenged to think like engineers as they designed prosthetic limbs, beaks, and shells for injured animals. Through creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, they explored how STEM can make a real-world impact—all while having a lot of fun!

Several Moon Area School District Elementary Challenge students qualified for the National competition through the International Academic Competition (IAC) regional qualifiers! 

Dr. Elizabeth Zona, an anesthesiologist and addiction medicine physician, has been visiting Moon Area elementary schools to present to fourth-grade students on healthy living and lifestyle choices. She is joined by Moon Area High School students Aubrey Marasco, Melina Toliver, and Gabby Gallagher.

The Moon Area Education Foundation (MAEF) will host its annual Trivia Night on Sunday, February 22, 2026 from 5:00–8:00 p.m.

Tiger Stadium and the tennis courts are now closed to the public due to our scheduled construction project. They will remain closed until the project is complete in the fall of 2027.

Allard and McCormick Elementary student PBIS teams recently attended the PBIS Elementary Student Summit at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

McCormick Elementary is proud to celebrate sixteen talented young artists who were selected as runners-up in this year’s Allegheny West Magazine Holiday Cover Design Contest! Out of 28 total runners-up from across the region, an impressive sixteen came from our very own kindergarten through fourth-grade classes.

Moon Area Challenge Teams recently had an exciting and enriching day at the Heinz History Center, where they competed in this year’s History Bowl. The event offered 4th, 5th and 6th grade students the opportunity to explore museum exhibits, solve creative challenges, and put their history knowledge to the test in a fast-paced competition.

Dr. Morgan Mihok, Ms. Jen Suehr, Mr. Bryan Seybert, and Mr. Ben Brands took their oaths last night, administered by Judge Michele Santicola. We’re grateful for their commitment to serving our school community.

This week we recognized Special Education Day and celebrated the incredible educators and school staff members who help make high quality education possible for our students receiving special education services.

Mrs. McCleary’s fourth grade English Language Arts class at McCormick Elementary School proudly completed a special project in which they planned and budgeted their own Thanksgiving meal for six guests.

McCormick Elementary School first grade students learned about the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade's history, New York City, and the science behind the making of the giant balloons! 

Third grade students in Mrs. Schooley’s class at McCormick Elementary School gathered for a cheerful Friendsgiving feast, filling the classroom with friendship and the delicious smells of shared treats. As they sat together, each student took a moment to share what they were thankful for this year.

School Resource Officer DeRusso visited McCormick Elementary’s first grade classes to share a story about the different kinds of police officers and the important roles they play in keeping the community safe. She talked with students about her job, answered their questions, and helped them better understand how police officers serve and support others.

Moon Area School District is pleased to announce that Mrs. Christina Frazier has been appointed the district's new Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Mrs. Frazier brings extensive experience in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavior interventions and Supports (PBIS), along with a strong alignment to the district’s vision and goals. 

The possibility of winter weather is right around the corner. We want to make sure families are as prepared as possible for any changes to our typical schedule. 

On October 25, several talented students from Brooks and McCormick Elementary Schools participated in Singing Saturday, a music-making event organized by the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus (PYC).

The Moon Area Art Department spent their in-service day at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, exploring new ways to bring nature-inspired creativity into the classroom. Garden educators led the professional development session, sharing strategies for incorporating repurposed and natural materials into art lessons.

Squad goals! Several McCormick Elementary students dressed up as police officers for their fall parties. They definitely looked ready to help School Resource Officer DeRusso serve and protect their school!

We are excited to announce that the Moon Angel Tree Program is returning this holiday season! Last year, we were overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of our Moon Area families, whose contributions helped fulfill the wishes, needs, and dreams of 194 Moon Area School District students, bringing joy to many families during the holiday season!

Moon Area School District Elementary Challenge students recently explored their creativity as nature artists in an engaging art lesson inspired by the renowned environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy.  This immersive experience encouraged students to connect with nature while expressing their unique artistic vision.

Mrs. Schooley’s third grade students at McCormick Elementary School recently put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test! Working in teams, students designed and built umbrellas to keep their “pets” dry. They experimented with a variety of materials and discussed which ones would work best to repel water.

McCormick Elementary School received a commendation from Representative Valerie S. Gaydos in recognition of their hard work and commitment to fostering a safe and fun environment for students to learn and grow.

This honor reflects the dedication of McCormick's teachers, staff, families, and—most importantly—our students, who make McCormick such a welcoming and supportive community. Thank you for continuing to partner with us in creating a place where every child can thrive.

McCormick Elementary School kindergarten students enjoyed a visit from Officer DeRusso, the school resource officer, who taught them about safety in school and the community.

After reading a book together, students discussed the many ways police officers help keep us safe. The visit supported district-wide efforts to teach students about awareness, responsibility, and community safety.

McCormick Elementary School is off to an amazing start as they officially kicked off their PBIS program! 

Our students proudly showed what it means to Be Safe, Be Kind, and Own Their Actions—and they did it with confidence and heart! Dr. Moore even surprised our student leaders with a special treat to celebrate their positive answers. 

The Moon Area High School Theatre Department is excited to present "Descendants: The Musical" as their fall show and would like to extend the opportunity to participate in the production to any interested fourth grade students in the district!

We want to take a moment to address an important issue regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools by students. While AI can be a powerful educational resource, it also carries risks if used inappropriately. Specifically, creating or sharing AI-generated photos or videos that misrepresent individuals or events, or that disrupt our school environment, can cause serious harm.

Moon Area Athletics would like to remind all supporters and visiting spectators attending varsity football games at Tiger Stadium that parking is strictly prohibited at Sharon Community Presbyterian Church, located directly behind our campus.

The 2025 Moon Area School District Homecoming festivities were a lot of fun! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the carnival, parade, and football game. Congratulations to Danica Bacu on being crowned the 2025 Homecoming Queen!

Happy Constitution Day! On September 17, McCormick Elementary School’s second grade students in Mrs. Carney’s, Ms. Durham’s, and Mrs. Isaac’s classes joined in a special celebration to honor the U.S. Constitution.

We are excited to kick off our Homecoming festivities this Thursday, September 18! Join us for the Parade and Carnival!

The Homecoming Parade will take place a 5:30 PM at the middle school and proceed to the stadium where it will conclude with a pep rally. 

The Homecoming Carnival will immediately follow the parade in the upper lot/ stadium lot of the Moon Area High School.

McCormick Elementary School has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Positive Behavior Support (PaPBS) Network for successfully implementing School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) with fidelity during the 2024–2025 school year.

Moon Area School District is pleased to share Dr. Lauren Morgan has been named Assistant Superintendent!

Dr. Morgan previously served as the district’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction for over four years, where she collaborated with faculty and administration to develop, implement, and support high-quality K–12 instructional programs that meet the diverse needs of all students. 

I am honored to enter the role of Superintendent for the Moon Area School District. Having worked in the district for over 20 years, I am deeply invested in this community and excited to work alongside you to support our students, staff, and schools.
